Business in the Community

At Bishop Fleming, we’ve always done the right thing. For our clients and our people. Our membership of Business In The Community underlines our commitment to this.

Being a Business In The Community member simply means being a responsible business. Focusing on the health of our business, communities and environment. Just as important, it’s about measuring our impact. Holding ourselves to account to achieve our goals. And being honest about how far we still have to go.

For our people it’s about getting involved. Helping us to identify priorities. Putting them into action. And creating a healthy, supportive and enjoyable workplace. In short, it’s a genuine opportunity to influence the firm’s future.

Inclusion + diversity

Inclusion and diversity are critical to developing our business. It’s about reflecting the diversity of our clients and our communities. Creating an inclusive work environment for everyone. And making you feel welcomed and supported, whatever your background.

We focus on five key areas. Supporting women. Encouraging social mobility. Being a more ethnically diverse business. Supporting LGBTQ+ employees. And supporting disabled and neurodiverse people.

This means setting policies and strategies that bring about positive change. Offering thorough training at every level. And understanding where we can do better. It’s about creating an atmosphere where people feel confident to raise any issues. To develop a genuinely inclusive, diverse and welcoming environment.

Equality + support

We were a founding signatory of the 'Women in Business Charter'. So, we’re committed to increasing the number of women at every level of the firm.

That’s why we’ve created a range of initiatives to support our female colleagues. Such as a network giving every woman in the firm access to a female mentor. Ensuring there’s at least one female interviewer on every job panel. Enhancing our maternity pay and producing a guide for managers on supporting team members who go on maternity leave. And introducing the Women’s Work Lab that helps unemployed mums to get ready for the workplace.

It’s all about creating a welcoming workplace where women can achieve their full potential. And this extends to our clients where we have an active Women in Business networking group that get involved in great activities like coasteering, stand up paddleboarding, creative activities and more.

We are a UK's Best Workplace™ for Women 2023.

Broadening horizons + practical support

We aim to support our clients by reflecting the communities we work in. It’s not just the right thing to do. It makes sound business sense. That’s why we organised a social mobility week to support disadvantaged school students. We invited local students into our Bristol and Plymouth offices and gave them skills workshops. Even took them to client meetings. So we could open their eyes to careers they may never have thought of. And encourage them to achieve their full potential.

And it’s why we support the Hargreaves Lansdown Strive Black Interns scheme. Working with universities to offer two internships a year. Specifically for local students from BAME backgrounds.

Community + contributing

We’re committed to supporting our local communities. So, we encourage our people to give back as much as possible. Join us and you’ll find plenty of opportunities to get involved. That might involve volunteering as a Business Advisor for Young Enterprise. Getting involved in our social mobility programmes to mentor disadvantaged students. Joining a team to go beach cleaning at lunchtime or after work. Or taking part in one of the many running events we sponsor. Whatever you get involved in, you’ll enjoy the chance to give something back to the community you work in.
