"Changing careers can be difficult, but for me, it was the best decision I've ever made. From being a chef to being an accounting apprentice at Bishop Fleming, I've gained valuable financial knowledge and improved my communication skills. It's been an incredible journey so far. I'm so glad I made the switch, and I haven't looked back since”.

Why I chose the apprenticeship route

Knowing the cost of studying off your own back and how important experience is, made applying for an apprenticeship a no brainer for me. I wanted to work for a large firm that had a fun sociable team and the opportunities to experience the different avenues within the industries. The Launch Pad program has that all wrapped up in one.

My apprenticeship journey

My accounting apprenticeship story is a little bit different to most. I transitioned from the hospitality industry as a chef to becoming an accounting apprentice. It was a significant change, but I decided to make the switch because as a chef, I struggled with the antisocial working hours and the lack of structure to my week. I also missed out on family and social events, and the stress of navigating through the pandemic was taking its toll on me. After 9 years as a chef, I felt I had reached my professional goals and was ready for a change.

I started studying for my AAT qualifications whilst I was a chef. Back then, it was with the aim to open my own business one day and be able to understand the financial side of the business. Fast forward a couple of years and I realised I had really enjoyed studying accountancy and stretching the academic side of my brain. The next step was to start looking for trainee accountancy jobs and applying for apprenticeships in the Plymouth area. In September 2022, I joined Bishop Fleming as an accounting apprentice.

What are the best bits of working at Bishop Fleming?

Honestly, the people. The people make the job. Everyone is so friendly and approachable. I feel my personal wellbeing and professional development is valued. The team has made my career journey an insightful learning experience and has also arranged great social activities, which has really helped me build new relationships.

We also have monthly boardgame lunches and a massive variety of teas and coffees.

What I've learned from my apprenticeship so far

Since September 2022, I have been welcomed into the accounts team in Plymouth and supported in learning all about accounts preparation for small companies and businesses. I have worked on a couple of more complicated clients and the exposure to these is invaluable. It was so interesting to learn about changes in shareholdings within a company, why companies chose to issue more shares and how companies can be funded. I have also been involved with other businesses using Invoice Debt Financing to help with their cashflow and the implications this choice can cause the business.

I have acquired not only economic and financial expertise essential for the job, but also gained skills and confidence in communicating. Not only do you need to be able to put on your headset and call whoever you need, but also how to network and socialise at large firm events. I have also adapted to a structured work schedule with time off on weekends and holidays, as well as learning to use LinkedIn to maintain a professional online presence. Additionally, I’ve now written and posted my first blog, and I’ve also learnt how to remember a tea and coffee order for over 8 people.

Do I miss being a chef?

No, I haven’t looked back. Career changing is a complicated hard decision, but I am so glad I took the leap.
